{"id":149,"date":"2012-10-13T13:58:10","date_gmt":"2012-10-13T13:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/twinmommeetsautism.com\/?p=149"},"modified":"2012-10-13T13:58:10","modified_gmt":"2012-10-13T13:58:10","slug":"fall-ahead-or-what-summer-taught-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/twinmommeetsautism.com\/index.php\/2012\/10\/13\/fall-ahead-or-what-summer-taught-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Fall ahead, or what summer taught us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twinmommeetsautism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Trek-to-Bondcliff-09-04-121.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-161\" title=\"Trek to Bondcliff 09-04-12\" src=\"http:\/\/twinmommeetsautism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Trek-to-Bondcliff-09-04-121-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Summer turned to Indian Summer, and now fully to Fall, my favorite season. &#8220;What I my learned on my summer vacation&#8221; is a stale headline as yellows and reds paint leaves on the trees.\u00a0\u00a0 Yet lessons are always relevant and indeed vital to this Mom because they take the felt and make it real, if only as words on paper to be savored and shared.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0So what\u00a0did this special-needs mom learn?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Failure happens, and we survive<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 Despite the pontification of PhD&#8217;s experts, despite the ABA mumbo-jumbo and two monthe of diligence,\u00a0I failed at teaching W. to wear underwear.\u00a0\u00a0He&#8217;s 18 years old and truly has a will of own, despite whatever cognitive age he may be.\u00a0\u00a0 That&#8217;s probably a good thing &#8211; even though it likely drove away\u00a0a teacher\/helper here.\u00a0 Thinking back I suppose locking the teacher in the\u00a0bathroom\u00a0for tens of minutes probably wasn&#8217;t an enriching job, despite the pay.\u00a0 The time spent on W. also meant little to no time spent working on J.&#8217;s maladptive behavior, not by design. (mom guilt, mom guilt)\u00a0 Yet here we are, trying it a different way now, and moving on.\u00a0 It led us to finging a frankly better ABA expert, and to a newfound respect for age appropriate choices by our kids &#8211; even if they are not our own.<\/li>\n<li><em>Self-determination wins<\/em>.\u00a0 W. clearly stated his wishes to Go Commando.\u00a0 In a disorder of head-banging and self-injurious behavior when human desires can&#8217;t be expressed, at least my W. found some half-appropriate means of communicating.\u00a0 You kind of have to admire the gumption, despite his flawed ability to show it.<\/li>\n<li><em>Beauty and strength shine through<\/em>.\u00a0 J.&#8217;s sweet and loving disposition to his brother so characterized those long afternoons spent monitoring whether Will was motivated enough to emerge from the bathroom for whatever reward was proffered.\u00a0He has an amazing ability to be patient and\u00a0go with the flow, even when it so violates his nature, like those 5 am\u00a0rising to go on long hikes.\u00a0 J. also had a fabulous summer enjoying his swimming pool and new gym facility.<\/li>\n<li><em>Hikes of stunning beauty, <\/em>as the never-ending trail carries us forward.\u00a0 We summited 10 of New Hampshire&#8217;s vaunted 4,000 foot or above peaks, including a mammoth 19.5 mile Traverse of the Bonds over Labor Day weekend.\u00a0\u00a0 Full disclosure: the trek was not without its autism moments (don&#8217;t ask a man who poops every morning at 7 to forego it on a hike, or to care if 12 fellow hikers we&#8217;ve never met\u00a0are sharing the moment.)
