{"id":131,"date":"2012-08-14T11:42:12","date_gmt":"2012-08-14T11:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/twinmommeetsautism.com\/?p=131"},"modified":"2012-08-14T11:42:12","modified_gmt":"2012-08-14T11:42:12","slug":"what-i-miss-about-my-autistic-child","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/twinmommeetsautism.com\/index.php\/2012\/08\/14\/what-i-miss-about-my-autistic-child\/","title":{"rendered":"What I Miss About My Autistic Child"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twinmommeetsautism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Empty-plate-08-14-12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-132\" title=\"Empty plate 08-14-12\" src=\"http:\/\/twinmommeetsautism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Empty-plate-08-14-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"314\" \/><\/a>There are\u00a0empty plates at our dinner table this week while W. and J. attend Camp.\u00a0 I thought the sound of my exhale post-Camp drop off on Sunday would echo down the Eastern seaboard.\u00a0 After days of planning and packing, they were off.<\/p>\n<p>But something happened along the trip home &#8211; I missed them.\u00a0I still do, even though we enjoyed\u00a0the leisurely drive home thru local wine country, and have\u00a0both tackled long-overdue projects and errands.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m collecting a rolling list of all the wonderful things I miss about W and J. this week.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>chores they do, and I don&#8217;t.\u00a0 They empty the dishwasher, wipe the table after meals, and put their dishes in the dishwasher.\u00a0 (reading this, oh college student daughter of mine?)<\/li>\n<li>taking breaks &#8211; When the bus beeps at 2:45 pm, I get to force myself to stop, take 15 minutes and be human, instead of an automaton answering email and dealing with seemingly perpetual work demands as a work from-home freelancer in a service profession.<\/li>\n<li>walks &#8211; I made my husband walk the neighborhood with me last night after dinner.\u00a0 Even though my guys seldom talk and J. likes to walk 10 paces ahead of me, they&#8217;re my exercise companions.<\/li>\n<li>pure joy at the simplest things &#8211; J&#8217;s favorite cranberry cereal in which he pours the milk to the tippy-top then drinks 2-3 bowls of it;\u00a0 W&#8217;s Leap Pad that he sneaks away and plays with delight.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We grown neurotypicals complicate life way beyond what&#8217;s needed.\u00a0 I&#8217;m storing all these moments when I miss W and J in my heart, and hoping they feel the same about the little things I do for them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are\u00a0empty plates at our dinner table this week while W. and J. attend Camp.\u00a0 I thought the sound of my exhale post-Camp drop off on Sunday would echo down the Eastern seaboard.\u00a0 After days of planning and packing, they were off.
